The *zashiki ΐ~ is a guest room; its name deriving from that of the mat originally provided for seating which in time developed into the covering of such rooms' floors with *tatami τ. Zashikikazari is the manner for arranging ornamental objects such as flower vases or tea ceremony utensils *chanoyu-no-dougu ΜΉο, in this important space, for which there are special formulae developed in the Muromachi period . Objects would be placed in the alcove *tokonoma °ΜΤ, on the obi-itadoko ΡΒ° platform, on shelves *tana I, or in the decorative study space tsukeshoin t@. There were also rules for the placement of objects in meeting rooms *kaisho ο, and reception rooms in traditional residences *shoin-zukuri @’. A special household officer was responsible for these arrangements. |
