shiguchi 仕口
KEY WORD : architecture / joints

An angled joint. There are two general types of shiguchi.

1 watashigake shiguchi 渡掛仕口, transversely crossed timbers or those with parts set at right or oblique angles. Among the watashigake joints are T-joints, ooire hozosashi 大入ほぞ差, a plain tenon that goes either a little over half the width of the beam or one that is called a through or full tenon because it extends out beyond on the opposite side; *arikake 蟻掛 (a half-lap dovetail joint); *watariago 渡腮, (a cogged or cross lapped joint); *tome 留 (mitered joint); *aigaki 相欠 (an L-shaped corner lap joint without mitering); *nagarehozo 流ほぞ (an example of an oblique joint).

2 kumitate shiguchi 組立仕口 are joints made by connecting various kinds of tenons hozo ほぞ and mortises *hozoana ほぞ穴. Among the kumitate shiguchi are *hirahozo 平ほぞ (a straight, medium size tenon); nagahozo 長ほぞ (a long, straight tenon); *jigokuhozo 地獄ほぞ (a blind, wedged tenon); *arihozo 蟻ほぞ (a dovetail tenon); kamahozo 鎌ほぞ (a gooseneck tenon); and mechigaihozo 目違ほぞ (a blind stub tenon). These tenons fit into appropriately shaped mortised. They are often reinforced by pins *sen 栓 or long keys *shachi 車知.
