nakahoudate 中方立 | ||||||
KEY WORD : architecture / general terms
A vertical, finishing strip of wood placed between the threshold *shikii 敷居 and the lintel *kamoi 鴨居 at the center of the opening made for sliding screens such as *shouji 障子 or *fusuma 襖. It covers the junction point of the two screens. Another structural element that resembles the nakahoudate when viewed from the exterior is a *meshiawase 召合, an L-shaped stile connecting piece that is made thick enough to cover the gap between the two sliding doors. Meshiawase is still in use, but the nakahoudate became absolete in the Muromachi period.
