shinogi　鎬

1　The upper part of a timber that is cut diagonally on each side in order to form a peak. In cross section the member is pentagonal. Shinogi are found on ridgepoles *munagi 棟木, hip rafters *sumigi 隅木, and on base rafters. One example was found on the south aisle *hisashi 廂, beyond the core *moya 母屋, of Houryuuji Daikoudou 法隆寺大講堂 in Nara. This example was found in 1937 when the lecture hall was dismantled for repairs, and found to date from 990. 2　A decorative molding applied to the ends of bracket arms *hijiki 肘木, rainbow beams *kouryou 虹梁, and to the molded ends of nosing *kibana 木鼻, that extended beyond the surface of a corner pillar and the ends of wall plates *daiwa 台輪. This decorative molding became an important characteristic of the Zen style *zenshuuyou 禅宗様. One example is Tenneiji Sanjuu-no-tou 天寧寺三重塔 (originally five-storied pagoda, 1389) in Hiroshima prefecture.
