The application of colour to various architectural elements. In the case of paintings, this normally involves the use of animal glue * nikawa 膠, or water colours suisai 水彩. Techniques include flat wash *hiranuri 平塗, line and colour-wash *horinuri 掘塗, overall colouring koroshinuri 殺塗 and shading *kumadori 隈取. In architecture, colouring agents such as pigments *ganryou 顔料, and dyes senryou 染料 are used. Inorganic colorants *muki ganryou 無機顔料, based on metal oxides are often used on buildings.
