KEY WORD : architecture / aristocratic dwellings

A passage used by grooms in *shoin 書院 style stables *umaya 馬屋 of warrior residences, buke yashiki 武家屋敷 in the Muromachi and Edo periods. It ran the length of the building and divided the animals stalls, tachiba 立場, from the guard house, toozamurai 遠侍. It had a door *oodo 大戸, at each end and an earth floor *doma 土間. Period illustrations suggest the passage was sometimes covered with timber slats, itasunoko 板簀子. The horses were fed from this space and hay and fodder, magusa 秣, was kept there.
