kiriago 切顎
KEY WORD : art history / sculptures

Detached chin of a mask. A feature of the bugaku mask *bugakumen 舞楽面, *Saisourou 採桑老, noh masks *noumen 能面 of the *okina 翁 type, and some Korean and South-East Asian masks. After carving the mask as an entirety, the chin area is severed off with a saw cut extending out and down from the corners of the mouth. The severed chin is then retied in place with a short cord. When the dancer moves, or speaks, the chin jiggles gently. The kiriago differs in construction from the separately-carved, cup-shaped dangling chin *tsuriago 吊顎 found in other bugaku masks.
