Ch: juetou dingmiao. A brush technique used to create
the clothing of figures in an ink painting. The brush strokes are initially thick
and pronounced and then diminish in width in a jerky and staccato fashion resembling
the shape of a nail. A worn out brush is often used to achieve this effect. Ma
Yuan (Jp: Ba En 馬遠; fl.ca.1190-1264) and Xia Gui (Jp: Ka Kei 夏珪; fl.early 13c),
painters of the Southern Song academy, are known for works in this manner. One
of the eighteen types of figural portrayal *jinbutsu
juuhachibyou 人物十八描. |
