KEY WORD : architecture / general terms | ||||||
1 Also
called *ukebana 受花.
A section of a lotus pedestal *rengeza
蓮華座 which resembles a flower platter. It takes the form of a round and relatively
flat open lotus flower with six or eight petals. The flower petals turn
upward, in contrast with the petals of a *kaeribana
反花, which turn downward. The keban is usually placed between the
*renben 蓮弁, the lotus
petals in the upper register, and the *shikinasu
敷茄子, the bulging middle section of the base. In a more complex rengeza,
the keban is placed between the upper and lower shikinasu.
Lotus pedestals with keban were used for 8c sculpture, as for example, the
Fukuukenjaku Kannon 不空羂索観音 in Toudaiji *Hokkedou 東大寺法華堂, Nara. After lotus
pedestals became more popular and more complex in the Heian period, keban
became more frequent. 2 More commonly referred to as keko 華籠. The flower baskets or plates that are used for Buddhist flower-scattering rituals. |
