kazaridana　飾棚

It is found in mansions with large rooms *hiroma 広間, in the shoin style *shoin 書院. Kazaridana is either shelving or a cabinet for displaying treasured things. The shelving itself is arranged in innumerable combinations to produce highly decorative patterns. Such shelving is placed within side alcoves *tokowaki 床脇, adjacent to the main alcove *tokonoma 床の間. There are often cabinets at the floor level *jibukuro 地袋, at the ceiling level tenbukuro 天袋, or both. Their vertical dimensions are about 1/5 of the height of the area from the floor to the ceiling. Sometimes the cabinets extend only to half the width of the shelf space. Some alcoves have circular windows with sliding *shouji 障子 and sometimes shelves are set in front of them. The shelves are made of various woods including zelkova, paulownia, mulberry, cherry, rare foreign woods, camphor, or black persimmon.
