KEY WORD : art history / paintings | ||||||
A print
mounted on a hanging scroll. A format used for *ukiyo-e
浮世絵 prints. Generally, two sheets in the *ooban
大判 format size were joined vertically and mounted with paper border and
backing kami-byousou 紙表装 onto a simple hanging scroll *kakemono
掛物 and used to decorate the houses of townspeople. Kakemono-e popular
in the first half of 19c were often prints of beautiful women
*bijinga 美人画 and beautiful boys
by
artists such as Utagawa Toyohiro 歌川豊広 (?-1830) and Kikukawa Eizan 菊川英山 (1787-1867).
Utagawa Toyokuni 歌川豊国 (1769-1825) and Kunisada 国貞 (1786-1865), who also
produced actor prints *yakusha-e
役者絵, and Utagawa Hiroshige 歌川広重 (also known as Andou 安藤 Hiroshige, 1797-1858) worked on landscapes and birds-and-flowers
in the kakemono-e format. In addition, hand-colored *beni-e
紅絵 prints in the habahiro hashira-e 幅広柱絵 (wide pillar-picture)
format by Okumura Masanobu 奥村政信 (1686-1764) and Ishikawa Toyonobu 石川豊信 (1711-85)
are also sometimes referred to as kakemono-e, because the size and
the way they were decorated closely resembled later kakemono-e. However,
these used only one larger ooban sheet rather than two. |
