Lit. night attack on the Horikawa Palace. A pictorial subject depicting one of the many events in the life of tragic hero Minamoto no *Yoshitsune 源義経 (1159-89). After the Minamoto defeated the Taira 平 clan in the Genpei 源平 War, Yoshitsune's close association with the retired Emperor Goshirakawa 後白河 (1127-92; r.1155-58) aroused the suspicions of Yoshitsune's elder brother Yoritomo 頼朝 (1147-99). In the Tenth month of 1185, Yoritomo's forces staged a night raid on Yoshitsune's residence at the intersection of Horikawa and Rokujou 六条 avenues in Kyoto. The incident, related in HEIKE MONOGATARI 平家物語 (The Tale of The Heike), GENPEI SEISUIKI 源平盛衰記 (The Rise and Fall of The Genji and The Heike), and GIKEIKI 義経記 (The Chronicle of Yoshitsune), was illustrated in warrior pictures *musha-e 武者絵 by several *ukiyo-e 浮世絵 artists. | ||||||
