Also haritsukega 貼付画 . Abbreviation of kabe haritsuke-e 壁貼付絵. Paintings
on paper (or infrequently on silk) which are pasted onto the fixed walls
or panels of a room. A type of *shouhekiga 障壁画 (paintings on walls and sliding doors). One of the earliest of the rare
examples on silk is The Illustrated Biography of Prince Shoutoku Shoutoku
Taishi eden 聖徳太子絵伝 (1069), that once decorated the walls of the Picture
Hall, Eden 絵殿 in Houryuuji 法隆寺 (now in the Tokyo National Museum). Haritsuke-e are more frequently associated with castles and residences in the shoin style *shoin-zukuri 書院造 that developed in the 16c, Momoyama period. Paintings
in ink or colors on gold background, or paper pasted on the walls of the
alcoves, are a distinctive characteristic of the shoin style. Locations
for haritsuku-e include: on the walls of the alcove *tokonoma 床の間, tokokabe haritsuke-e 床壁貼付絵, paintings on the walls behind the
staggered shelves *chigaidana 違い棚, chigaidana haritsuke-e 違い棚貼付絵; on the panels along the lower
part of the translucent sliding panels *shouji 障子, shouji koshi-ita haritsuke-e 障子腰板貼付絵. on the narrow wall space
above the non-penetrating beams *nageshi 長押, nageshi ue kokabe haritsuke-e 長押上小壁貼付絵. |
