zengo hagiawase 前後矧合 | ||||||
KEY WORD : art history / sculptures | ||||||
Also abbreviated to zengohagi 前後矧. A method
of making a wooden statue where the statue is carved in two separate pieces to
form the front and back of the figure, divided vertically, and more or less in
line with the back of the ears. Zengo hagiawase is the simpliest of the hollow joined block construction techniques known as *yoseki-zukuri 寄木造. Making the sculpture in separate parts allows for a lighter object and helps dry the wood. It also led to greater efficiency in production. |
