zen'inshiki-no-niwa　禅院式の庭

Lit. Zen 禅 temple style gardens. A modern term designating the various types of gardens associated with Zen sect temples. Zen'inshiki-no-niwa include dry landscape *karesansui 枯山水; gardens *shoinniwa 書院庭; and tea gardens *chaniwa 茶庭. Although these garden types are not exclusive to Zen temples, the forms were largely developed within the Zen cultural context and have the simple elegance of the Zen artistic spirit.
