Floors that have different levels. For example, the floor of the alcove *tokonoma 床の間, in a tea ceremony room is usually a step higher than the floor in the rest of the room. The shoin style *shoin-zukuri 書院造, audience hall and the Shiroshoin 白書院 at Nishihonganji 西本願寺 (1632), in Kyoto, has three floor levels. The lowest level, *gedan 下段, is for the audience and is 120 *tatami 畳 mats. The middle level is called *joudan 上段 and is 37 mats. The highest level is called *joujoudan 上々段 and is 5 mats.
