      rectangular window used in exterior walls, fitted with thick horizontal 
      timber bars *koushi 格子. Used in Monoyama and Edo periods castle structures, ancillary row-houses 
      *nagaya 長屋 surrounding 
      residences of feudal lords daimyou yashiki 大名屋敷, the offices of administrative 
      officials, and the gatehouses nagayamon 長屋門 and other service structures 
      of the homes of local headmen shouya 庄屋. It generally resembled the 
      *mushamado 武者窓 in 
      form and function, but differed from the latter in having horizontal rather 
      than vertical timber bars, longer but fewer in number than in a mushamado of corresponding dimensions. The wooden bars and the window surround 
      might be plastered or unplastered.  2 In the Edo period, yoriki was a term for samurai 侍 who served as a police officer under the direction of a bugyou 奉行 of daikan 代官.  |
