yakifude 焼筆
KEY WORD : art history / paintings

Lit. burned brush. A wooden stick with a burned tip. Like charcoal used in western style painting, yakifude is used for underdrawings, and can be easily erased with a feather brush. Originally a round piece of cypress about 30cm long was sharpened and approximately 3cm of the tip was charred. As the tip wore down, it could be burned again. Today, willow is also used.
