A pictorial subject taken from "Arrowhead," the play of the *Kabuki Juuhachiban ‰Ì•‘Šê\”ª”Ô that deals with the historical story of the Soga ‘]‰ä brothers Gorou ŒÜ˜Y (1179-93) and Juurou \˜Y (1172-93) and their vendetta against their father's murderer (see * Soga monogatari-e ‘]‰ä•¨ŒêŠG). The play was first performed in 1729 by Ichikawa Danjuurou 2 “ñ‘ãŽsì’c\˜Y. The plot features Gorou, who, after falling asleep while polishing a huge arrowhead, dreams that Juurou is in trouble. Gorou awakens, grabs the horse of a passing farmer, and using a radish as a whip rides off to the rescue. YA-NO-NE was depicted in *yakusha-e –ðŽÒŠG prints especially by artists of the Torii school *Toriiha ’¹‹”h and in several striking *ukiyo-e •‚¢ŠG. | ||||||
