2 A Muromachi period castle built with some of the features of an aristocratic residence. When guardian daimyou 大名 received government appointments from the court and received a special title oyakatasama 御館様, they built castles with features from aristocratic residences; these were termed yakatajiro. This tradition continued in the Edo period when daimyou such as Mouri 毛利, Shimazu 島津 and Uesugi 上杉 were permitted to use the oyakatasama title and built in the yakata style. |
