Wanagikomi is an angle joint also called an open mortise and tenon joint, a slip slot or finger mortise. It consists of tie beam *hari —ΐ, with an open mortise cut deep enough to receive the full breadth of a rafter and narrow enough to allow a tight fit when the rafter is inserted. The combination of king posts, *shinzuka ^‘©, with tops cut with finger joints and the ridge pole *munagi “–Ψ, inserted into them is called wanagikomi watariago —Φ“γž“nδG. This method is also used in Western construction. Another example of this joint is when a penetrating tie beam *hinuki ”σŠΡ, is joined to a pillar. The wanagikomi method is used in the kyouro system, kyouro-zukuri ‹ž˜C‘’, of roof framing.
