UKIYO-E RUIKOU　浮世絵類考

"Currents of Thought on Ukiyo-e," a series of biographies of *ukiyo-e 浮世絵 artists compiled and revised by a number of scholars in the late 18c and 19c. Although the most important reference work relating to ukiyo-e artists, the original text is not extant. Around 1789 (Kansei 寛政 1) Oota Nanpo 大田南畝 (Shokusanjin 蜀山人; 1749-1823) edited the original text, and in 1800 (Kansei 12) Sasaya Kuninori 笹屋邦教 ( ? - ? ) added an appendix titled YAMATO UKIYO-E NO SHIKEI 大和浮世絵の始系 (The Early Lineage of Japanese Ukiyo-e). In 1802 (Kyouwa 享和 2 Santou Kyouden 山東京伝 (1761-1816) amended the text. In 1818 (Bunsei 文政 1) Shikitei Sanba 式亭三馬 (1776-1822) made further revisions, while in 1833 (Tenpou 天保 4) Keisai Eisen 渓斎英泉 (1790-1848) added his own research to the work, calling the version MUMEIOU ZUIHITSU 无名翁随筆 (Miscellany of the Old Man with No Name) or alternatively ZOKU UKIYO-E RUIKOU 続浮世絵類考 (Supplement to UKIYO-E RUIKOU). In 1844 (Kouka 弘化 1) Saitou Gesshin 斉藤月岑 (1804-78) appended more information to make ZOUHO UKIYO-E RUIKOU 増補浮世絵類考 (Supplement to UKIYO-E RUIKOU). Finally, in 1868 (Keiou 慶応 4) Tatsutaya Shuukin 竜田舎秋錦 ( ? - ? ) added still more material to create SHIN ZOUHO UKIYO-E RUIKOU 新増補浮世絵類考 (New Supplement to UKIYO-E RUIKOU).
