Also read naikaku. Also called naijou 内城. An inner compound. Generally, it refers to the central portion of a castle compound. When applied to the overall layout of an early modern castle, it refers to the nucleus of a castle compound. It includes not only the inner compound *honmaru 本丸, but also the secondary *ni-no-maru 二の丸 and tertiary san-no-maru 三の丸 compounds. | ||||||
