A small upper floor or mezzanine loftspace *chuunikai ’†“ñŠK, usually only about one *tsubo ’Ø in area, and often suspended from the main cross beams, *hari —À, at the top of the jikubu ޲•” of the house. It was commonly found in the Edo period vernacular houses, *minka –¯‰Æ in parts of the Kawachi ‰Í“à plain and Izumi ˜a�ò near Osaka, and on the island of Sado �²“n and was believed to have been used as servant accommodation. The earliest surviving example, at Yoshimura ‹g‘º house, Habikino ‰H‰g–ì, in Osaka, dates from c. 1620-40. In Tokushima prefecture, a similar space was referred to as *hiroshiki �L•~.
