| tsukinomi 突鑿 | ||||||
| KEY WORD : architecture / tools | ||||||
| A paring chisel that shaves a timber entirely by
hand pressure. Chisels called *tatakinomi
叩鑿 are struck with a hammer. The tsukinomi has a longer handle and a longer
blade than the tatakinomi, and there is no capping hoop at the end of the
handle, which is usually made from rosewood or ebony. The cutting blade also has
a sharper angle, generally about 20 degrees. The paring chisel is used for finishing deep mortise holes and the surfaces of spliced joints. The blade-width varies, but some tsukinomi may be as long as 55mm. |
