"Touhaku's Explanation of Painting", comments of the Momoyama period painter Hasegawa Touhaku ’·’Jì“™”Œ (1539-1610) on well-known Chinese and Japanese painters, paintings and techniques. It is known as the first essay by a painter in Japan. The inscription says that around 1592 Priest Nittsuu “ú’Ê of Honpouji –{–@Ž›, Kyoto, recorded Touhaku's statements on painting, and later they were compiled randomly in a small bound book. The original text is still owned by Honpouji. Although the book is commonly known as TOUHAKU GASETSU, the original title reads "Comments on Painting: Record of what Hasegawa Touhaku told" Ga no setsu: Hasegawa Touhaku monogatari kore-wo kisu ‰æ”Và:’·’Jì“™”Œ•¨Œê‹L”V. The work discusses nearly 50 Chinese and Japanese painters including Liang Kai —Àž² (Jp: Ryoukai; act. early 13c), Muqi –qæ® (Jp: Mokkei; act. late 13c), Yujian ‹ÊŠÀ (Jp: Gyokkan; act. late 13c ; see *sougenga ‘vŒ³‰æ) as well as Mokuan –ÙˆÁ (died in China around 1345), Nouami ”\ˆ¢–í (1397-1471) and Souami ‘Šˆ¢–í (?-1525 ; see *Amiha ˆ¢–í”h). In particular Touhaku paid special attention to the lineage of Josetsu ”@Ù (act. early 15c), Shuubun Žü•¶ (act. first half of 15c), and Sesshuu áM (1420-1506) and his followers, the lineage into which Touhaku placed himself. The text is translated into English by Michael Cunningham in the appendix to his unpublished dissertation "Unkoku Tougan ‰_’J“™Šç" (University of Chicago, 1972).
