      of board roofing *itabuki 
      yane ”•˜‰®ª, whereby boards tochi-ita žz”Â, about 1-3cm thick 
      and 60cm long are split along the straight grain and laid in such a way 
      as to have a considerable overlap.  Another type of board roofing is called tokusabuki –Ø‘¯•˜. A single board tokusai-ita –Ø‘¯”Â, not as thick as tochi-ita, is laid between thinly split kokera-ita Š`” and tochi-ita. Roofs of tochibuki were used extensively on tenements, shops, warriors' gates and even mansions in the 16c-17c. Examples can be found on the Koumyouji Nioumon Œõ–¾Ž›m‰¤–å (1249), in Kyoto.  |
