teinaisha 邸内社
KEY WORD : architecture / shrines

Also dainaisha 第内社. A shrine within the estate or premises, teinai 邸内, of a nobleman. The mansion, teitaku 邸宅, or yashiki 邸, is the nobleman's dwelling. The term teinaisha also refers to a shrine placed within the homes of ordinary people. It is believed that the household gods live in these shrines and the residents offer food and pray before the shrines. Usually the head of the family prays audibly with the rest of the family bowing their heads and listening. This ritual usually takes place early in the morning before breakfast.
