Also written 立子 or 建子, read tatego. 1　 A generic term for the vertical muntins on lattice *koushi 格子, found on sliding translucent paper screens *shouji 障子. Vertical muntins on fences are also called kakiko 垣子, and are frequently made of bamboo. Whole bamboo muntins are used in a grid shape for *yotsumegaki 四目垣, and kinkakujigaki 金閣寺垣, while split bamboo muntins are used for *kenninjigaki 建仁寺垣. Other vegetation is sometimes gathered into bundles and used as muntins. Examples include spice bush which is used for *uguisugaki 鴬垣 and bush wood which is used for *shibagaki 柴垣. 2　Lit. standing members. The longitudinal or upright slats of a fence. These vertical members are usually tied ito horizontal bars *oshibuchi 押縁 with cord. In some cases they are affixed to a bottom sill, either with nails or on a sill, and to the top bars *tamabuchi 玉縁. Bamboo is the faborite material, but othere types of light wood may be employed.
