tan　丹

A yellowish-red pigment *ganryou 顔料 used in Oriental painting touyouga 東洋画. Tan means 'red' and is now used as an abbreviation for red lead *entan 鉛丹. formerly it seems to have referred to both entan and tetsutan 鉄丹 (iron red), made from ferric oxide. Tetsutan is now known as *bengara 弁柄.
