Also sumimune 隅棟. A descending corner ridge. A built-up ridge made of tile that follows the downward course of the corner of a hip roof *yosemune yane 寄棟屋根, from the main ridge *oomune 大棟, to the eave edge *nokisaki 軒先. In a hip-and-gable roof *irimoya yane 入母屋屋根, the inner end of this ridge terminates approximately in line with the base of the gable bargeboards *hafu 破風, where it is attached to the descending ridge *kudarimune 降棟. A second short ridge, the offspring ridge *chigomune 稚児棟, continues to the corner. The ends of each are usually fitted with ogre face tiles *onigawara 鬼瓦. Examples: A hip-roof at Koufukuji Toukondou 興福寺東金堂 (1415), Nara. A hip-and-gable roof at Kakurinji Jougyoudou 鶴林寺常行堂 (1397), Hyougo prefecture.. | ||||||
