The application of colour to various architectural elements. In the case of paintings, this normally involves the use of animal glue, * nikawa 膠, or water colours, suisai 水彩. Techniques include flat wash, *hiranuri 平塗, line and colour-wash, *horinuri 掘塗, overall colouring, koroshinuri 殺塗 and shading, *kumadori 隈取. In architecture, colouring agents such as pigments, *ganryou 顔料, and dyes, senryou 染料, are used. Inorganic colorants, *muki ganryou 無機顔料, based on metal oxides are often used on buildings. | ||||||
