A special mat for one or more guests, shouban Ί, who@are companions to the guest of honor, shoukyaku ³q. When the guest of honor is seated in front of the alcove, *tokonoma °ΜΤ, the shoubanseki is placed adjacent. Where no shoubanseki is provided, the shouban must sit either on a regular guestmat or on the step-in mat.
