shoubanseki　相伴席

A special mat for one or more guests, shouban 相伴, who　are companions to the guest of honor, shoukyaku 正客. When the guest of honor is seated in front of the alcove, *tokonoma 床の間, the shoubanseki is placed adjacent. Where no shoubanseki is provided, the shouban must sit either on a regular guestmat or on the step-in mat. Examples can be seen at Ikujaku-no-seki 憶昔席, Nishiｈonganji 西本願寺 Kyoto; and at Roteki'an 露滴庵, Joudoji 浄土寺, Hiroshima prefecture
