Lacquered leather. Untanned skins of cow, wild pig or deer are softened by soaking, wrapped around a mold to dry in the sun, then removed and lacquered. The technique, used in the Kofun period for shields and in the Nara period for boxes, was rarely deployed after the Heian period.
