shijiko 四耳壷

Chinese, si'erhu. A jar with four lug handles (literally loop ears) around the mouth or neck of the jar, the handles may be round or square. The original function of the lug handles was to facilitate carrying by passing rope through them. In China, old Yue porcelain (koetsuji 古越磁 in Japanese) and white glazed porcelain (hakuji 白磁 in Japanese) feature these handles. In Japan ko-Seto 古瀬戸 (old Seto) shijiko are well known.
