sudarezama 簾狭間

Also sudaresama. A transom *ranma 欄間, with openwork spaces filled by a mesh of bamboo kanchiku 寒竹, the horsetail plant tokusa 木賊, ditch reed yoshi 葭, or bush clover hagi 萩. These very slender stems are bound or plaited together with cord. Spaces are left between the stems so that light and air can pass through easily. The term sudarezama is also applied specifically to foliate panels *kouzama 格狭間, filled with a reed mesh.
