sokuhitsu 側筆
KEY WORD : art history / paintings

An ink painting brush stroke that uses the body of the bristles rather than tip to create a thick line. Generally, in Eastern painting and calligraphy the brush is held perpendicular to the paper or silk *chokuhitsu 直筆, but when the artist or calligrapher wants to produce a thick line, he will hold the brush at an angle, using the thick part of the bristles rather than the tip. From ancient times this technique was employed in ink painting and yamato style painting *yamato-e やまと絵 to capture the nature of rocks and mountains. During the 18-19c it became popular among artists of the Maruyama and Shijou schools *Maruyama-Shijouha 円山四条派 who used this technique to create various degrees of shading *kumadori 隈取 or *bokashi 暈.
