A special mat for one or more guests, shouban ‘Š”Ί, who are companions to the guest of honor, shoukyaku ³‹q. When the guest of honor is seated in front of the alcove *tokonoma °‚ΜŠΤ, the shoubanseki is placed adjacent. Where no shoubanseki is provided, the shouban must sit either on a regular guest mat or on the step-in mat.
