A lantern type that was designed after the Edo period for exclusively use for votive lights at shrines; it is not used for gardens. These four-sided lanterns are very tall; the stem is short and flares out at the top and bottom. The base is built up of two or three levels. In order to light the lantern steps are sometimes added.
