shikishigata 色紙形 | ||||||
KEY WORD : art history / paintings
Colored, square-shaped paper inscribed with verses, then cut and pasted onto the upper portion of large screens and sliding door panels. Sometimes the squares were drawn directly onto the surface instead of pasted. Chinese poems were affixed to Chinese style paintings and Japanese verses were employed for *yamato-e やまと絵 paintings. Later these forms became an art form in their own right, called *shikishi 色紙, independent from the larger painting surfaces to which they were attached.
