shido 紫土

An old name for purple pigments *ganryou 顔料, and dyes senryou 染料, mentioned in documents such as the Shousouin Monjo 正倉院文書 (8c). In the Heian period a mixture of cinnabar red *shu 朱, and indigo *ai 藍, was used to make a purple pigment called shido.
