A township composed of *shake 社家, families who held posts (usually hereditary) as officials or servants in shrines *jinja 神社. Such settlements were located directly adjacent to, or close to the shrine. One example is Kamo-gou 賀茂郷, located to the east of Kamo Wakeikazuchi Jinja 賀茂別雷神社 (wellknown Kamigamo Jinja 上賀茂神社) in Kyoto. | ||||||
