seiroudana 城楼棚

Also written 清楼棚 or 西楼棚, sometimes called seinikaidana 西二階棚. Staggered shelves *chigaidana 違い棚, constructed in a recess adjacent to an alcove *tokonoma 床の間. In total, there are three open short shelves. Two shelves extend from either of the recess. A third shelf rests on struts *ebizuka 海老束, placed on the bottom shelves, and bridges the gap between the lower shelves. The center shelf is raised about 3-5cm above the other two shelves. The side shelves are not always placed at an equal level. One of them may be a centimeter or slightly more below the level of the other. The edges of the raised shelf are finished with a curvilinear type of molding called *fudegaeshi 筆返し. There is also a shelf enclosed by two sliding doors is placed against the ceiling. See *fukurodana 袋棚. The seiroudana is very common and was particularly popular in *shoin 書院 style rooms from the mid-16c onward.
