Lit. Chatter
of a Mountain Dweller. A two volume treatise on painting theory by the
late Edo artist and Confucian scholar Tanomura Chikuden “c”\‘º’|“c (1777-1835).
Completed in 1813 (Bunka •¶‰» 10) and published in 1835 (Tenpou “V•Û 6), it
is perhaps the best known of Chikuden's many writings on painting and includes
CHIKUDEN SHIYUUGAROKU ’|“cŽ—F‰æ˜^ (Record of Paintings by Master Chikuden
and Friends). Likely based on critical Chinese painting commentaries such
as Huachanshi Suibi (Jp: GAZENSHITSU ZUIHITSU ‰æ‘TŽº•M) by Dong Qichang
(Jp: Tou Kishou
“Ÿ‘´¹; 1555-1636), Chikuden's work combines anecdotes about
artists and impressions of paintings with critical commentary centering
around his list of one-hundred rules for painting. The text is published
in Sakazaki Tan âè’R, ed, NIHON GARON TAIKAN “ú–{‰æ˜_‘åŠÏ 1, pp. 239-262.
