Ch: Lin Hejing (967-1028). A noted poet, calligrapher and scholar of the Northern Song dynasty. Rin Nasei's real name was Lin Bu Ρη (Jp: Rin Po), while his posthumous name was Hejing. He was raised in Qiantang K but is associated with his hermitage on Mt. Gu Η near the West Lake (*Seiko ΌΞ). Lin Hejing is said to have domesticated two cranes, a story illustrated in two painting types called "petting the cranes" (bukaku-zu ί}) and "tame cranes" (junkaku-zu ιί}). Lin was also known for his fondness for plum blossoms, and he is included in the painting theme called "Four Favorites (*Shiai l€)." Lin is typically shown as the ideal hermit, wandering through a landscape in search of his beloved plum blossoms accompanied by a crane and servant. Paintings of Lin Hejing can be traced to the Southern Song period and are found in Japan from the Muromachi period (15c). Representative works include a hanging scroll attributed to Shoubun όΆ (mid-15c, Kyoto National Museum) and screens (*fusuma-e ¦G) by Kanou Sansetsu λμRα (1589/90-1651, Daihouonji ερΆ) and Kanou Tan'yuu λμTH (1602-74, Shouon'an VΆΑ). | ||||||
