Lit. random joints. Various types of architectural joints that can be either dovetail, *aritsugi ‹aŒp, for simple work, or gooseneck, *kamatsugi Š™Œp, for more complex construction. These joints, *tsugite ŒpŽθ, are placed with no intention of �creating uniformity. The position of these joints varies from building to building. For example, joints used on purlins, *keta Œ…, and on a ridge pole, *munagi “–Ψ, are scattered in zigzag fashion. This method increases the strength of the connected members.
