ren
KEY WORD : art history / paintings

A long piece of paper or board the same length as *zenshi 全紙 (approximately 135 cm) but one quarter its width of 66cm, approximately 16.5 cm. A ren is derived from the name given to a two line stanza (unit) called risshi 律詩, an eight line Chinese poem of the Tang dynasty. This type of Chinese poetry couplet has each line written on a separate ren sheet (or board). A set of two ren is then hung symmetrically on pillars inside a house for decoration.
