ponchi-e ポンチ絵

A general term for Western-influenced joke pictures, odokega おどけ画, kokkeiga 滑稽画, and caricatures, manga 漫画, including pictures with hidden meaning and satire, which became popular in Japan in the latter half of the 19c. The word "ponchi" was borrowed from the English weekly magazine, Punch, which began publication in 1841 and included pictures with puns and caricatures. Punch was used as a model for humorous newspapers and magazines in Japan throughout the Meiji period.
