ouhi 横被
KEY WORD : art history / sculptures

1 A mounting for paintings and calligraphy which originated in China. It consists of a scroll with rollers at both ends that is hung horizontally on a wall by stretching strings attached to the rollers.

2 Because the shape of ouhi 1 resembles a long, narrow Buddhist vestment called a *kesa 袈裟, ohi came to be synonymous with this garment draped over the left shoulder of a Buddhist priest.
