okamabashira 御竃柱
KEY WORD : architecture / folk dwellings

Also written 御釜柱. A pillar which is erected opposite the main central support pillar *daikokubashira 大黒柱, near the cooking facility okama 御竃, in the hard-packed earthen floor area of a folk dwelling in Ibaraki prefecture. The word okama means 'rice cooking pot' and tradition has it that the name of this pillar is derived from having the god of the cooking facility enshrined there. The pillar has a wide variety of names depending on the area. Among them are ebisubashira 恵比須柱, shimodaikoku 下大黒, and daikoku nirami 大黒にらみ.
